ABOUT

Anand Chetty was born in East London, South Africa. When the government expropriated the family home to build new housing for the ruling class his family was fortunate enough to be able to immigrate to Vancouver in 1974 when he was 9. In 1991 while working for a major pharmaceutical company he transferred to Calgary to set up a distribution facility. For the past 30 years Anand proudly calls the North East his home. In the early 2000s, he opened a business in the automotive industry. He later ventured into the charter bus and tourism industry. His successful track record speaks strongly of his ability to manage budgets, and support people to give and do their best. Anand is a supporter of and has volunteered for and donated to organizations such as Centre Street Church, Inn From The Cold, Calgary Sports Car Club, and the New Canadian Friendship Centre. Anand Chetty has also donated his time and resources in building houses for the less fortunate in Mexico with Casas Por Cristo.

Anand has also helped on many campaigns and was instrumental in many victories including, but not limited to, MP Jasraj Singh Hallan and most recently Dr. Leslyn Lewis in her bid to become leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

Growing increasingly frustrated with government irresponsibility, lack of accountability and transparency, Anand made the decision to be a candidate for councillor in Ward 5.

Anand understands and has gone through the ups and downs of the changing economies and he understands the financial hardships of many Calgarians and to which the majority of City Council has become oblivious.

Calgary City Council, for too long, have sheltered themselves from economic realities by raising taxes placing a heavier burden on Calgarians instead of reducing their costs to ease the burden on taxpayers and businesses.

Anand believes that it’s time for change at City Hall and together we can make this city a better place for all residents.

Anand believes that the government is there to serve and help its citizens prosper. However, this current Council has used the citizens to help themselves prosper.

ISSUES

City Council should be accountable and transparent, and this has not been the case. Hypocrisy exists in City Hall where there is one standard for the City and another for the public.

City Council should be dealing with racial inequities within City Hall rather than grandstanding and virtue signaling on issues outside their mandate (importing other country’s issues e.g., Black Lives Matter, defunding the police). For too long our Liberal mayor and councilors have been silent as the federal government has attacked our industries and economy. This is unacceptable.

Anand Chetty brings a passion for people and fresh perspective and a vision to create economic opportunities for the people of Ward 5.

Some VISION ideas to be discussed include the following:
  • Advocating for a fair share of infrastructure for communities in the NE
  • Working with existing community outreach organizations to provide them with necessary ESL materials as they serve New Canadians.
  • Replacing existing Grade 12 requirements for City of Calgary jobs with a proficiency exam to allow more opportunities for capable applicants.
  • Enhancing the safety of all Calgarians by providing an affordable opportunity to improve their driving skills. (Creation of an advance driver training and safety facility on identified City lands in Ward 5. Help all Calgarians learn advanced driving techniques for Calgary’s adverse weather conditions (e.g., snow and black ice))
  • Having a regular job fair for residents and businesses in Northeast Calgary
